Workout Gear

In my last post, Working Out In San Francisco, I shared all of my favourite workout spots in the city and promised to follow it up with a post about my favourite workout gear!  I don’t know about you all, but a new gym outfit always motivates me to break a sweat!

Tops:  I wear a large variety of tops, depending on my workout.  For dance, I like crop tops with a plaid button up tied around my waist; for spin class and hot yoga, I typically forgo a top all together and sweat it out in my sports bra; for runs, outdoor bike rides and barre classes, I prefer a lightweight tank.

  • H&M – This ‘short tank top’ is my favourite tank to wear to dance.  It is slightly cropped, very lightweight and comes in multiple colours.  Best of all, it is CHEAP!  I have found it for as low as $2.95 in stores and online it is listed at $5.99.  I own it in multiple colours and am always looking for new colours to add to my collection!

  • Lululemon – I love Lululemon’s Silverescent Technology tops!  They are lightweight, moisture-wicking and will last you forever!  They’re great for any kind of activity but I especially love them for running or barre class.  I also love the long sleeve version for running outside in cooler weather or for layering to and from the studio.  Great investment pieces that come in a plethora of different colours each season!

  • Nike – Fun, affordable tops that I wear for a variety of different workouts!

  • Victoria’s Secret Sport – Cute lightweight tops with fun sayings such as “I Hate Running” and the one below, “Earn Your Wings”!  I love how the back is exposed so you can flaunt a cute sports bra underneath!

  • Sculpt Barre and SoulCycle branded tops!  I like supporting the businesses I love by purchasing their clothing!  Unfortunately, Sculpt Barre doesn’t sell online but if you’re in the Edmonton area, they have a nice selection at their studios with my favourite being a tank labelled “Shake It Off” (if you’re a barre star, you’ll understand!).  SoulCycle has a variety of apparel in store and online, such as this fun San Francisco tank and this grey crop top!  They’re lightweight enough to wear in class and fun to wear to-and-from if you’re like me and like to sweat it out in just a sports bra.

  • AritziaJ Crew FactoryOld Navy plaid shirts.  I usually tie one around my waist to-and-from a workout and for dance class!  If I plan on wearing the shirt out and about on regular days, I’ll invest in a nicer one such as the Aritzia or J Crew ones below, however, if I just planning on wearing it for dance, I’ll sometime pick up cheaper versions at Old Navy or H&M.

Sports Bras:  I prefer purchasing sports bras that have similar sizing to regular bras, versus the ones that are sized small, medium and large.  I also do a lot of high movement activities so I prefer maximum support.

  • Victoria’s Secret – These are my all time favourite sports bras!  They have multiple styles and colours and a large range of sizes, based on your regular bra size.  I find that the best selection is typically online and they fit similar to regular VS bras.  I wear these to every single one of my workouts now!

  • Calvin Klein Performance – As I prefer sports bras with more support, I only really wear these CK ones around the house but they are quite comfortable and the sizing works for me, even though it is small, medium, large.  I find this brand difficult to locate online but I did manage to find the sports bras at Macy’s (linked) and there is a retail store located in Union Square in San Francisco.  I’d recommend this bra for a low impact workout such as yoga.

Bottoms:  I usually work out in pants and like having a mix of basic black pants, as well as some fun alternatives.  I prefer to invest in quality basics and try to find cheaper alternatives for fun or trendy bottoms.

  • Lululemon – My favourite destination for basic black workout pants!  I have been wearing Lululemon since 2005 and can testify that these pants will last you forever and are definitely worth the investment!  They also have different styles and colours if you’re looking to spice up your workout gear with investment pieces.  My favourite basic black pair are the Wunder Under pants and I’m currently crushing on the blue High Times pants, pictured below.  I wear these a lot for dance and barre classes but I think they’re ideal for any type of workout, as well as for just lounging around at home!

  • alo – The ‘Goddess Leggings’ are a new favourite of mine!  Very stylish and comfortable and comes in over 40 colours!  (Tip: Nordstrom carries a selection of these and offers free shipping and ‘easier’ returns (in my opinion)!)  They’re a little on the heavy side so I wouldn’t recommend them for a sweat-drenching session such as a spin class but they’re perfect for low impact activities like yoga and barre.  (Note:  I’ve read lots of reviews that say that the lighter colours are see-through, however, I’ve had no issues with the darker colours!)

  • Nike – My go-to for ‘fun’ yet quality workout pants.  Nike pants are quite affordable in the retail store, as well as if you’re able to make it to a Factory store.  I love the fun colours that these pants come in and they’re lightweight enough for any workout!

  • Calvin Klein Performance – Quality workout pants for $25?  Yes, please!  As I said above, I find it difficult to find this brand online but they have a store in San Francisco that always seems to be having sales!  This cropped length is a favourite of mine for spin class and for outdoor biking!

  • Under Armour – I recently tried Under Armour leggings this year and love them!  They’re high quality and very affordable!  This particular style is very lightweight so they’re great for intense activities where you’re sweating a lot!

Shoes:

  • Nike – I only ever work out in Nike runners (unless I’m taking a heels dance class but that’s a different story)!  I have several pairs, however, my favourites are my Nike Free Flyknit iDs and the Nike Dunk Sky Hi Essentials!  The Nike iDs are amazing because you get to design them yourself by choosing a variety of details and the Dunk Sky Hi Essentials have a built in wedge and we all know how much I love heels!  (The wedge shoes are great for going to and from workouts, for dancing in and for wearing them out in general!)  I’ve found some great deals for Nikes at the factory stores and at Macy’s Finish Line locations.

  • Call It Spring – Though I didn’t mention heels dance classes in my last post, it’s only because I haven’t found one that I love in San Francisco yet.  Heels/Pumps/Underground Burlesque classes (at Dance Code Studio in Edmonton) have been a favourite of mine for the past few years and, as some of you know, I was recently a professional Burlesque dancer with The Pinheruppers.  We wore these Cadorella Spring heels for performances and they’re great for dancing in!  Dancing in heels creates a lot of scuffs so I wouldn’t wear my expensive shoes to class but Spring has a variety of affordable shoes that are great for dancing.

Socks:

  • Calvin Klein Performance – I never used to wear any particular type of sock while working out until I tried Calvin Klein Performance socks!  Yet again, they were difficult to find on the web but I have purchased them at Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, the CK Performance store and at The Bay (for my Canadian friends).  They are made specifically for running, however, I find them useful for all types of physical activity.  They also have really affordable grip socks for barre class!

So there you have it, my favourite workout gear!  Here are some selfie-worthy outfits from the past year (and yes, I am wearing heels in most of these photos as they were from earlier in the year when I was working as a burlesque dancer)!  Do you have any favourite workout outfits?  I’d love to hear them!  I’d also love to hear if you’ve found a great heels dance class in San Francisco that I should try!  Comment or tweet me me your suggestions!
